In addition to very strict graphic file requirements, these files have to be named “Waypoint Symbol 000.bmp”, “Waypoint Symbol 001.bmp”, “Waypoint Symbol 002.bmp”, … “Waypoint Symbol 023.bmp”, (for a Garmin 60Cx) corresponding to maximum of 24 custom waypoint icon symbols (for my Garmin 60Cx your unit may be different). The earlier posts described how to create and name graphic files for uploading to your Garmin as custom waypoint icons. For that, you’ll have to use Garmin’s MapSource program (aka Trip and Waypoint Manager), and set up custom waypoint icon graphics so that MapSource can import and use them. But while third-party software for handling GPX data (both upload and download) will download the waypoints, most (if not all) don’t support display of these custom waypoint icons. The two previous posts in this series dealt with creating and uploading custom waypoint icons to supported Garmin GPS units. Make sure you have the most recent version. The app has been replaced by Garmin's BaseCamp, which, apparently, lacks a bunch of features that were available in the former, such as connecting to a GPS device via serial connection and all the waypoints and tracks are included in a single database, as opposed to being saved to separate files, as they were in Garmin MapSource.Note: Version 6.15.3 of MapSource accidentally dropped support for custom waypoint icons version 6.15.4 puts it back. Newer Garmin devices won't function with Garmin MapSource, since it isn't supported anymore. One method speaks about installing other third-party utilities such as Garmin Training Center or BaseCamp, while other websites specifically guide you into installing this app without media. If you look around online, you can surely find a way to install Garmin MapSource without having a previous version already available on the target computer. It is worth mentioning that this application is actually an updater for the Garmin MapSource program, so you must have a previous version installed so that you can use this one effectively. Garmin MapSource is a handy software solution that was developed in order to help Garmin devices owners view various map documents as well as various waypoints, routes or tracks and transfer them on their Garmin devices without significant efforts.
